Dare to ask really anything and don't let the final exam drive yourself crazy

Meet Nieke! She has been working with us as a student lecturer for two years now and mainly supervises graduation candidates. Get to know her better, learn why acknowledging mistakes is important, and take advantage of her top tip for the final exam.

Who are you? What do you do in daily life?

I am Nieke. I completed my bachelor's degree in law last year and am currently studying European and Dutch Law, so I'm taking 2 Masters.

What do you do at Studied?

At Studied, I am a student lecturer, I mainly assist secondary school students in passing their final exams, but I also teach students who are not yet in their exam year. At the moment, I am actively teaching mathematics, geography and German, but I can also support students in Dutch or English.

Which subject do you enjoy teaching the most?

I actually like the languages the most, so English, Dutch and German. My studies are all about precise words, so language is very important to me. I like to help students understand it better.

What do you love about teaching at Studied?

Helping students and seeing that the guidance has an effect makes me happy. In addition, I really enjoy experiencing what secondary school was like through the students. After all, I've always had a really good time there.

What do most students have trouble with?

Usually acknowledging what is going wrong and focusing on preventing that mistake from being made again. Often, more time does not necessarily have to be invested in a profession, but the time has to be used differently.

How do you ensure that your students progress?

Every lesson, we look together at what's most important at that moment. Is that practice, or are there gaps in the material understood that need to be closed first. This is how we treat both old and new fabrics.

What is your most important tip for students?

“Really dare to ask anything”. Of course, that's what teachers at school also say, but you can feel shy there because of the presence of other students. One on one tutoring eliminates that, I'm just here to answer all your questions. We often find out that a difficult issue only fails because a small part of the basics is missing. If you ask your questions, the fabric pieces will fall into place more quickly.

What is your most important tip for the final exams?

Start on time, but don't let yourself be fooled either. You know what kind of questions you're going to get, it's really not that different from other tests. If you've made it this far, those final exams will work too!

How important do you find the connection with your students?

Very important. Because it's so important that you ask questions, you also need to feel safe enough to do this. That click helps a lot with that.

Would you recommend working at Studied? And why?

Yes, it's great to help students who have trouble with school! In addition, you are back to the material you did yourself a few years ago. That feels nostalgic.
